Internationals - Global Cafe
Global Cafe is run by a team of local Christian volunteers. Some volunteers are students at Leeds Met and are part of the Christian Union others are a bit older and are from different mainstream churches in Leeds. Most of the volunteers are British however we are pleased to have a few Internationals as part of the team as well. Philip Thomas from Friends International, a Christian charity, leads the team.
We realised that International students find it hard to meet British people and that being an International student can be a lonely and sometimes difficult time. We did some research that showed 98% of the International Students that we asked would like a meeting point like Global Cafe.
Global Cafe’s Aims
Global cafe aims:
To offer friendship—
For the Cafe to be a safe, fun, relaxed environment where International Students of any religion, race or country can feel at home and make friends with British and other International Students.
To offer services—
To help International Students understand British and other cultures better and to be a place to practise English. We also give International Students helpful and relevant information on Leeds and organise trips and days out.
To offer an opportunity to discover faith—
For International Students who are interested we offer the opportunity to find out more about Jesus and the Bible through ‘Discovering Christianity Groups.’ There is no pressure to join these ‘optional extras’ which happen outside of the cafe. The Friday evening cafe has no ‘faith’ part except once a term at Christmas & Easter.
